The brief

Document the Agotime Kpetoe Festival as a story about culture, heritage and identity, not as a highlights package of a busy weekend. The film needed to hold up as a record of the festival while still working as a piece of storytelling for audiences with no prior connection to Agotime.

The challenge

Festivals are easy to film badly. The colour, movement and scale will always produce attractive footage, and that footage will always flatter the camera more than the people in front of it. The challenge was to resist the postcard version: to stay long enough, and close enough, that the weaving, the ceremony and the community read as continuous traditions rather than spectacle staged for visitors.

Our approach

We built the story around people rather than events. Weavers, elders and participants set the pace, and the structure follows the meaning of the festival heritage carried forward through kente, through family lines, through public ceremony instead of a chronological programme of what happened when. Some stories are bigger than a single event. Agotime Kpetoe is one of them, and the edit was shaped to make that clear.

Production

Shot on location in Kpetoe across the festival, with coverage planned around ceremony, craft and community rather than a fixed shot list. Sound was treated as primary material, not atmosphere: language, drumming and the loom recorded properly on location. Editing, colour and sound finishing were completed in-house to an international standard.
